pathfinder is providing energy and design services for clean energy master plans (cemps) at:
suny polytechnic (utica)
the cemps will drive significant long term, proven, cost effective building upgrades and infrastructure changes that can help lead to carbon neutrality by 2050 to align with the climate leadership and community protection act. the cemps include ashrae level ii audit for all of its buildings over 5,000 sq. ft. primary objectives include:
- identify and recommend building and controls upgrades based on buildsmart 2025 ashrae level ii audits.
- assess building and plant level efficiency improvements and load reduction strategies including beneficial electrification.
- assess opportunities to decarbonize electricity and heating fuel sources at the campus level.
- provide detailed analysis and recommended scenarios to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
- develop implementation plan that includes financially viable, realistic, and implementable multi year and phased capital projects.
- identify sites for potential on site renewable locations ,including photovoltaic panels (pvs), wind, or ground source.
- initiate discussions with local utility electric provider for changes in future demand and electrical infrastructure.
pathfinder provided mechanical, fire protection, and plumbing engineering for both the study and design of renovations to the school of dental medicine. the project is largely driven by the hipaa requirements for patient privacy as well as replacing aging equipment and systems. the project is being completed in three construction phases. to begin, pathfinder evaluated the existing systems, confirmed the availability of utilities are available and compatible with new systems, and investigated existing fire protection system expansion capabilities.
the welcome center, in the first phase, includes:
- new waiting area and reception / check out area with modifications to the hvac and fire protection systems
- business and billing office renovation including modifications to hvac and fire protection systems
the second and third phases include the implant center and the 1st floor clinics, including:
- disconnection of old and reconnection of the new dental chairs to plumbing systems and utilities (suction, air).
- new sinks will also be provided throughout the implant and clinical areas
- consultation, treatment and recovery rooms with dedicated hvac supply and return and re work of sprinklers
- digital x ray and cat scan and dispensary rooms with dedicated hvac supply and return and re work of sprinklers
pathfinder is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for renovations and an addition to modernize the lake placid olympic center. the center hosted two olympics and is set to host the 2023 world university games. it is central to the lake placid community and a significant economic generator for the local market and tourism. the facility is in need of renovation to stay relevant for hosting national and world competitions. the existing complex has three ice sheets and an olympic long course oval with associated facilities for athletes and visitors. there is a recently renovated connecting convention and visitor center.
this project will modernize and renovate the six basic components within the olympic center: usa arena, 1980 arena, link building, 1932 arena, the oval and maintenance building.
the engineering portion of the project is significant with new mechanical, power, lighting, fire alarm and plumbing systems planned for the majority of the complex. the project will be designed in compliance with nys executive order 88. the mechanical systems are intended to create flexibility, functionality and be energy efficient. design will include heating, cooling, ventilation, energy recovery, desiccant dehumidification for ice arena spaces and automatic temperature control/energy management systems to create the appropriate thermal environment.
plumbing engineering design includes upgrades to the domestic cold water, domestic hot water, sanitary drainage and ventilation, storm water drainage and fire suppression. lavatories will feature low flow fixtures.
electrical engineering design addresses power, electrical service and distribution, fire alarm and a new scoreboard system. all interior and exterior lighting will be replaced with led fixtures. electrical design includes modifications to existing systems per new programming and building layouts, plus new systems for recent additions to the building. exterior improvements include the installation of a dmx led lighting system for multi spectral illumination to create façade lighting per the facilities request. a completed fire alarm system evaluation has determined replacing the existing configuration with a new fully addressable fire alarm system.
the anticipated construction value is $75 million.
pathfinder has provided full service design for multiple projects at rochling medical involving product design and mold making, accelerated tooling, strong up front engineering for medical device manufacturing and renovation of office and engineering areas. approximately 6,200 sq. ft. of office space, lobby, reception area, conference room and support areas were renovated. phase 2 of the project renovated the engineering office.
mechanical engineering design provided new ahus, ductwork and layout. also provided were new locations for thermostats, diffusers and return air grilles coordinated within the ceiling system and adjacent areas. the exhaust/ventilation system with energy recovery was provided for toilet rooms. plumbing design provided sanitary, cold water, hot water, vents for new ada toilet rooms, relocation of the sink and piping in the break area. the existing sprinkler system and pendant head locations were revised in the new office space. electrical engineering design included preparation of power, lighting, exit signs, emergency lighting and fire alarm communication plans.
founded in 1947, the george eastman museum is the world’s oldest photography and film museum located on the historic rochester, ny estate of george eastman, the pioneer of popular photography. a major construction project was tasked to relocate the main entrance and create a new visitors center. now the museum entry is more convenient, visible, welcoming and accessible.
the visitors center, a new glass and steel structure, has preserved the historic façade of george eastman’s garage on its interior and created a single hub for entry to the museum, dryden theatre, a fully renovated education/meeting hall, new café and gift shop.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering to relocate and redesign the main entrance. design also included renovations to the colonnade, which provides the only interior route between george eastman museum’s main entrance and galleries and the historic mansion and gardens. the new visitor center also includes a new café and museum shop.
the mechanical systems include a built in place unity for the curtis theatre and a rooftop unit serving the gift shop, café and palm house. each includes energy recovery. the lobby area has flat steel radiators and new controls allowing for better space conditioning.
plumbing and lavatory fixtures were updated and pathfinder provided rework of the fire protection system for the modified spaces.
new power and lighting were provided. existing structural and new architectural conditions, such as varied ceiling heights and angles, created lighting design complexities. the lighting layout coordinates with the architectural features of each area and utilizes period appropriate led fixtures.
modifications and additions complied with shpo and the rochester preservation board.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design for a new 7,000 sq. ft. surgery center constructed for cornerstone eye associates. the facility features two surgical suites, pre and post op areas, offices, consultation room, waiting space and a medical support area.
new york state code and nysdoh compliant ventilation design incorporates the required air changes, ventilation rates, filtration, humidity, and pressurization differentials for surgery and critical care areas. semi custom air roof top handlers are vav and gas fired dx with heat recovery and “higher outdoor air” capabilities.
surgical air handling systems were provided with hepa filtration and an electric cartridge humidifier enabling air quality maintenance in surgical and pre and post op areas. a small condensing boiler was designed to accommodate “reheat capabilities” for comfort and humidity control in critical areas.
new low flow public facility plumbing fixtures, showers and wash sinks are featured. domestic systems include a gas fired domestic water heater with recirculating pump. natural gas service, distribution piping and meter detail were designed. the medical gas distribution piping layout along with oxygen and vacuum outlet specifications were identified, including an oxygen system with manifold design.
lighting layout was coordinated with the hvac systems and architectural features of the spaces utilizing high efficiency led fixtures. an emergency/standby generator and distribution was provided including emergency lighting and receptacles in critical areas of the facility. additional design included layout of the nurse call system and lighting control system.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the renovation of this 74,588 sq. ft. building.
the complex houses 1,100 students in four wings and a central quad area. renovations are being completed in three phases with phases 1 and 2 completed and phase 3 in construction.
during phase 1 renewal an existing two story dining hall was renovated to create food service, student laundry, a fitness room and seating areas. additional work included replacement heating, plumbing, power and data systems. a new fire protection system was added for student safety.
design includes new fire alarm and sprinkler systems, updated power and data in all resident rooms, creation of study areas, kitchenettes and gathering locations on each floor of the towers and rowhouses, improvements to ventilation systems including energy recovery technologies and replacement of all lighting with modern led fixtures.
in a separate project, pathfinder provided full service design for the decentralization of the existing boiler plant as part of a multi phased project. pathfinder’s design included two high efficiency condensing style boilers in each building with a service connection for an optional third boiler. the modular system provides heat for both the building and production of domestic hot water.
a ddc building management control system was installed to monitor and manage boiler, pump and control valve operation and was incorporated into the campus network.
electrical upgrades supports the new mechanical equipment.
pathfinder has provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for a new park administration facility comprised of two buildings: a 5,750 sq. ft. vehicle maintenance/shop building and a 6,650 sq. ft. building for park administration offices and park police functions.
the vehicle maintenance and storage facility included: service bay with lift for truck maintenance, offices, toilet rooms, vehicle storage, fuel storage, fueling island for gas and diesel, hazardous chemical store room, general park storage and a park woodshop. the building features all electric heating and cooling, in floor radiant heat for the service bay, co monitoring and evacuation system and energy recovery ventilation.
the project included vrf systems for the administration building heating and air conditioning and dedicated exhaust/energy recovery systems for ventilation. specialized requirements for park police functions such as holding/booking areas, weapons storage/maintenance and interview rooms were incorporated into the mechanical and electrical system designs. the perimeter of both buildings were equipped with an in slab snowmelt system.
plumbing scope of work included sanitary, waste, and vent piping; well and septic systems to serve both buildings; domestic water distribution piping system including hot water generation and a compressed air system.
led lights were used throughout the facilities and a full size backup generator and emergency power distribution system was incorporated into the design.
pathfinder provided a study and designed replacement of existing chillers for the eight story 186 bed strozzi building, which provides inpatient 24 hours a day, seven days a week. energy savings, incentives and maintainability were key design considerations. in order to meet the 400 ton cooling load the new $1.1 million plant design included multiple air cooled chillers netting 600 tons and providing capacity redundancy chiller failure. the layout is four 150 ton chillers with all chillers using environmentally safe refrigerant in accordance with the clean air act.
in order to maximize the energy efficiency of the building, pathfinder selected high efficiency chillers with full load and part loads that exceed the thresholds laid out for air cooled chillers. design specifically focused on part load efficiencies for the chiller selection, at 8% improvement over code iplvs, as the majority of run hours will fall in part load conditions. the control system sequences the chillers and runs multiple chillers at part load in order to maximize the energy efficiency of the plant.
national grid provided a rebate incentive for chillers that exceed the efficiencies in the new york state technical resources manual (2019). these rebates were based on the type of chiller and the step improvement in the part load iplv’s over national grid tabulated values. the rebates for the 100% design chiller selection is approximately $19,000.
pathfinder provided high performance mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering. the new three story 35,000 sq. ft. facility provides labs and shared facilities for start up companies in downtown binghamton. this project features flexibility for tenant requirements and received federal, state and local funding.
pathfinder supported the requirements for a nysedc grant for the project. a $6 million grant was provided and $3.7 million of that was allocated to the building construction for a total construction budget of $14.8 million.
pathfinder provided construction and close out commissioning services for the new $40 million, 95,000 sq. ft. building housing classrooms, faculty offices, laboratories, storage areas and general use spaces. special use areas include laboratory suites with fume hoods, a room pressurization system and various laboratory gases and services. the commissioning procedures meet requirements for leed v.4 pre requisite commissioning/enhanced commissioning and sucf directive 15h 9.
pathfinder provided award winning mechanical, electrical, plumbing engineering and energy modeling for the $14 million project. this 55,000 sq. ft. three story building was completely renovated to accommodate criminal science, biology and nursing academic programs. the building also houses academic laboratories, nursing suites, laboratory media preparation and chemical storage areas, lecture halls, student lounges and faculty offices. the high performance design meets goals to achieve leed gold certification with 25 energy & atmosphere leed points, plus 1 point for superior performance. the ea credit 1 for optimizing energy performance was 19 points (the maximum allowed for a renovation).
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering and energy modeling as part of the complete renovation of monroe hall. the dormitory was constructed in the early 1960s and is 52,000 sq. ft. the purpose of this project was to improve functionality, appearance and accessibility, in addition to a complete renovation to the mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems within the residence hall. the renovation provided for 180 beds and common rooms, kitchenettes, conference room, seminar room, media room, recreation area and computer lab.

pathfinder provided high resolution laser scanning with post processing of the two story mechanical room with penthouse. the work was completed on behalf of the project architect and in advance of the design of building renovations. approximately 6,300 sq. ft. was scanned including low light areas. the renovation included replacement of most of the building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems without any as built documentation given none were available.
some 55 scans were completed of the multiple m/e/p systems for demolition, scaled to 1/8 inch accuracy.
the revit model was developed from the scan point cloud and site photographs and provided the architect with locations of termination points of the systems.
the hutchings psychiatric center building 8 underwent a gut rehabilitation with additions, totaling approximately 45,000 sq. ft. including a 12,245 sq. ft. addition. pathfinder provided energy modeling in support of executive order 111 and leed certification. pathfinder performed nyserda ta services to help achieve maximum financial incentives available from the new construction program.
design drawings for the 100% submission were used to create baseline and proposed design models according to ashrae/iesna standard 90.1 2007 appendix g, and as required by leed 2009, for achieving the maximum possible points under credit eac1. an improved envelope was modeled in the proposed design relative to the baseline and included increased exterior wall insulation, improved glazing and an improved roof. the proposed design has a more effective hvac design, including efficient space heating and cooling systems. as modeled relative to a baseline design, the project showed a 38% energy savings. this satisfied the minimum requirement of 10% energy savings for executive order 111. applying utility rates specific to the project results in 29% annual energy cost savings. this would achieve 11 points for leed credit eac1, which meets the minimum leed energy cost savings requirement and exceeds the project goal of four points.
key design features that reduced energy requirements included: efficient heating hot water and service hot water gas boilers; improved building envelope (roof, walls and window glazing); hvac controls, efficient chiller; advanced lighting system; lighting controls and occupancy sensors.
the project received $24,805 in nyserda incentives.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering for the renovation of the former tompkins trust company on the commons to house interpretive exhibits from local arts and cultures organizations. the building also includes a visitor information center, office areas, the ithaca/tompkins county convention and visitors bureau, wharton studio museum, dorothy cotton institute, the christopherson center and the community arts partnership.
the $3.7 million project included roughly 10,800 sq. ft. of main floor lobby, exhibits, visitor’s center, program spaces, archives, services and staff offices. it also included approximately 4,700 sq. ft. of additional staff and storage space renovations on the second and third floors and 4,100 sq. ft. of renovations in the basement. pathfinder’s design services included converting 2,700 sq. ft. of existing basement storage and office space to climate controlled archives for the historical collections.
pathfinder provided laser scanning of three elevator shafts at the court street parking facility in rochester, ny since accurate manual measurement was not possible. this provided precise as built and as maintained conditions of the shafts which were soon to receive new elevator equipment. using point cloud information, the scans created an interactive 3d image that allowed the project design team to navigate through the environment virtually and take accurate measurements of elements within the space.
pathfinder provided full service design for the replacement of the cooling towers serving the air conditioning system at the state office building in syracuse, ny, on behalf of the nys office of general services.
the new towers were equipped with variable speed fan drives. the existing bacnet controls system was expanded to the new cooling towers via the control vendor. the domestic water make up system was re worked to the new cooling towers and addressed metering, freeze protection, and backflow prevention.
electrical engineering design included:
- retrofit and installation of new circuit breakers into the mcc to feed the new cooling towers
- new enclosed circuit breaker to feed any new cooling tower controls
- new conduit and cables up to the elevator machine room and to the cooling tower
the rocky coast exhibit at the zoo in rochester, ny consists of aquatic animal habitats serving the penguins, polar bears and sea lions. the water systems were originally designed to maintain water quality though the use of ozone contact and degassing systems, and the ozone systems were no longer functioning. to maintain the proper hygiene in the water, chemical treatment has been used, which is not desirable or consistent with the guidelines of the american zoological association. some portions of the exhibits were also experiencing water loss due to leaks in the gunnite lining of the walls of the water portion of the exhibits. the circulating pumps serving the exhibit were original to the system, and in poor condition.
pathfinder evaluated the existing infrastructure of the ozone treatment systems and compared their capabilities with present standards. pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural and zoological architecture for the improvements. design included the following systems: water filtration and treatment; ozone contact and degasification; pumping for all exhibits; water flow and turnover rates to ensure compliance with most recent standards; power distribution to support new equipment; emergency power, where required; and mechanical room exhaust and ventilation. a subconsultant supported the development and design of the specialty habitat and life support system design.
pathfinder also provided design for the process control system to operate the exhibit water systems. pathfinder investigated the integrity of the water habitats to identify leaks and where remedial action would be required.
pathfinder also provided a design to provide “cooling” to the sea lion exhibit. during the summer, the water in the sea lion pool became too warm for these animals who are used to a polar environment. a process chiller was provided to chill and cool the water in the sea lion pool to maintain the climate at a more desirable temperature.
pathfinder provided construction phase commissioning services for the 75,000 sq. ft. three story imaging and medical office building which was completed in 2017. the building houses state of the art imaging medical spaces for diagnostics and treatment, support staff offices, general program areas and the region’s first stand alone clinic for autism specialists. the project is registered to achieve leed gold certification.
pathfinder provided mechanical engineering for a 10,000 sq. ft. kidney dialysis facility and medical office building for rochester general hospital. the facility had very specific requirements for patient comfort including individual heating control for each dialysis suite and radiant slab to maximize patient well being during the lengthy dialysis process.
pathfinder provided the hvac and hydronic design for the building, including control strategy for the ddc control system.
the project was delivered by a fast track design build method.
pathfinder provided mechanical and plumbing engineering for renovations at three school buildings, including:
parkdale elementary, a two story, 120,000 sq. ft. building
- 51 new classroom unit ventilators equipped with demand controlled ventilation for improved energy efficiency and indoor air quality
- new roof mounted unit ventilators with energy recovery systems
- new air cooled chiller and hot and chilled water piping distribution systems
- new dedicated air handling system serving the historic school auditorium
east aurora middle school, a three story, 190,000 sq. ft. building
- new cafeteria kitchen exhaust system; exhaust fan array was redesigned and relocated to the rear of the kitchen to make additional space available on upper floors
- new air cooled chiller and hot and chilled water piping distribution systems
- four new air handling units with energy recovery
- conversion of existing building hydronic hot water system to operate on propylene glycol solution
east aurora high school, a single story, 220,000 sq. ft. building
- new nfpa 61 compliant cafeteria kitchen exhaust and makeup air systems
- air handling unit to serve the band room and music classrooms with all system components selected and located to minimize sound transmission
- conversion of existing building hydronic hot water system to operate on propylene glycol solution
pathfinder provided enhanced energy modeling and nyserda technical assistance for the workforce training center in buffalo, ny on behalf of the buffalo urban development corporation. the project consisted of gut renovation and repurposing of 115,000 sq. ft. at an existing manufacturing plant. preliminary energy modeling results were provided to assist in hvac system selection, provide guidance for energy code compliance, achieve net zero energy (zne) and for preliminary sizing of a solar pv array for zne. energy modeling efforts continued through the end of design to facilitate energy savings calculations and nyserda performance based incentives.
hvac systems evaluated included a typical boiler/chiller system, all electric ground source heat pump system, all electric variable refrigerant flow (vrf) and a combined heat and power design. the all electric vrf system was recommended for achieving zne, but the boiler/chiller option was selected for costs. ecms recommended and pursued in the final design included variable speed pumping, efficient chilled water system, energy recovery and led interior and exterior lighting fixtures.
- ecms estimated to save 264,000 kwh and 16.400 therms annually
- projected energy costs 24% less than code minimum design
- $119,000 in available nyserda incentives
pathfinder provided enhanced energy modeling and nyserda technical assistance for new construction for a new 120,000 sq. ft. school building serving grades pre k 5. the district set a goal to achieve net zero for the building, which includes classrooms, administrative offices, cafeteria, kitchen and gymnasium.
the modeled site eui was 22 kbtu/sf/yr without pv and 10 kbtu/sf/yr including the 419 kw pv system. leed modeling showed 82% energy savings (including a pv system) and 83% energy cost savings. the project should receive the maximum 19 points for eac1 optimized energy performance and 7 points for eac2 on site renewable energy.
- full service design for this $24 million renovation project featuring cleanroom facilities for a device research and pilot manufacturing facility and associated laboratories. the project consisted of renovation of 36,500 sq. ft. including 10,000 sq. ft. of new class 100 space and 7,600 sq. ft. of new class 1,000 space.
- full service design for packaging lab cleanrooms for phase ii renovations and upgrades. the project encompassed nearly 14,000 sq. ft. comprising 8,000 sq. ft. of class 100,000 to class 100 cleanroom space and 6,000 sq. ft. of support facilities. design for fit up of 90 tools was also provided.
- several master planning projects were completed including programming for a two story 53,000 sq. ft. collaboration center; programming and schematic design for renovation of an 8,000 sq. ft. commercialization center; a conceptual site plan for development of a 44 acre parcel into nine lots for future campus buildings.
pathfinder provided mechanical, fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the renovations and addition at paine and zenger residence halls along with a connecting building supporting kitchen and dining facilities. the project re programmed space, improved ada and life safety issues and updated building systems. renovations consisted of upgrades to improve livability, comply with current building codes and improve energy performance.
the residence halls, constructed in 1965, are similar in size and utilization. paine hall is approximately 32,000 sq. ft. with 101 beds and zenger hall is approximately 31,000 sq. ft. with 88 beds. the renovated residence halls maximize the bed count, a large laundry room, study rooms, wi fi, and natural light. the renewal created open public spaces and offers a desirable housing choice for students with a contemporary, energy efficient, comfortable and safe living environment.
pathfinder provided energy modeling for the renovation of this 11 story, 160,000 sq. ft. energy intensive academic building with wet and dry labs, environmental chambers, classrooms, conference rooms and offices.
bradfield hall is one of the largest energy consumers at the university with an annual operating eui of 340 kbtu/sf/year. the campus has a target eui of 150 kbtu/sf/year for all laboratory buildings. a computer energy model using equest v3.64 was utilized to model the existing building energy use. a parametric analysis was then completed to determine the energy and cost savings associated with potential energy conservation measures (ecms) within the scope of the project. according to the schematic design phase model, the proposed energy conservation measures can reduce the operating eui of the building from 340 kbtu/sf/year to 224 kbtu/sf/year. further reduction in energy consumption can be achieved by upgrading the mechanical systems serving the non laboratory spaces.
based on a life cycle cost analysis (lcca) of three different system approaches, the proposed design anticipates an overall operating eui of 172 kbtu/sf/year. while the resulting estimated eui is shy of the target eui of 150 kbtu/sf/year, the proposed scope would anticipate a 49% reduction in overall energy consumption.
pathfinder provided energy modeling for the 30,000 sq. ft. addition to hudson hall, a laboratory classroom building with three stories, a basement and mechanical penthouse. using the total building performance method, the proposed design provided energy cost savings of 43.5% compared to the target of 20%.
pathfinder completed the required computer modeling of the facility to achieve a program goal of 20% energy savings over code and document compliance with executive order 111.
pathfinder provided commissioning for multiple phases for the university renovated center of excellence. the building is 117,000 sq. ft. and houses the life science and electronic laboratories.
pathfinder provided functional commissioning of the new mechanical systems for phase 1.
phase 3 included the addition of laboratories and a three story atrium with radiant heating/chilled slab cooling and natural ventilation features. additional equipment to serve phase 3 was built into existing systems requiring re commissioning of the updated systems.
pathfinder provided enhanced commissioning services for the mechanical and plumbing systems for the monroe county crime laboratory which achieved leed platinum certification. in addition to the formal commissioning checks, pathfinder was also involved as a consultant throughout the construction document review phase of the project.
located in downtown rochester, the four story, 45,000 sq. ft. building houses laboratories, support spaces, secure evidence storage, firing range, dna processing facilities and offices.
pathfinder provided enhanced commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems for this newly constructed residential community. the project included four 107,800 sq. ft. dormitories, four 138,000 sq. ft. dormitories and a 50,000 sq. ft. collegiate center.
commissioning to achieve leed credits 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9 for indoor environmental quality, construction indoor air quality, elevator systems, and door control and access systems was provided.
energy modeling was provided for rafuse, oconnor, johnson and digman halls, totaling 611,000 sq. ft. pathfinder’s energy modeling projected 32% less energy cost than the national baseline by which similar facilities are measured.
pathfinder provided mechanical engineering for a 12,300 sq. ft. addition allowing a food processing facility the ability to maintain specific temperature and humidity conditions.
pathfinder is providing mechanical, plumbing, fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the renovation of the historic 76,000 sq. ft. crosby hall, housing classrooms, studio and office space for the school of architecture and planning. it originally housed the school of business administration (school of management). this project is being designed with a deep energy savings retrofit target of 50% energy reduction relative to the building’s existing consumption and the goal of leed gold certification.
mechanical design includes a new hvac system with risers and horizontal ductwork, air handling units and ddc controls to connect with the existing campus system. new chilled water distribution piping, pumps and controls to supply chilled water to new air handling units and terminal cooling units will be provided. the campus chilled water system serves the basement of crosby hall. a new steam to hot water heat exchanger system with pumping, controls and distribution piping system will be equipped. in addition, the steam coil in the basement ahu will be replaced with a new hot water heating coil.
plumbing and fire protection design includes a new domestic water and sanitary distribution piping to new fixture locations, a gas fired water heater for domestic hot water system and an automatic sprinkler system on floors above the basement. new exterior perimeter drainage systems will address water infiltration issues in the basement.
pathfinder is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the total renovation of this 36,700 sq. ft. veterinary sciences building. meeting sucf’s deep energy retrofit directive energy goal for 50% eui reduction over existing conditions requires a high performance systems approach.
a hybrid ground source heat pump system (gshp) serves as the heating and cooling supply for the spaces throughout the building. a well field of 140 bore holes 450’ deep provides an electrified hvac approach using water to water gshp for generating both heating hot water and chilled water.
new heating, cooling, ventilation, air exchange, automatic temperature control and energy management systems are being provided. programs necessitate three air handling systems delivering dedicated outdoor air for veterinary science labs and boarding, surgical suites with energy recovery and classrooms, offices and common spaces with full energy recovery. a chilled beam induction system provides localized space conditioning and ventilation and minimizes fan energy.
the airflow systems for the animal boarding areas have requirements for high volumes of ventilation air that must be heated, cooled, dehumidified and humidified. the air handling systems use total energy recovery wheels to capture both sensible and latent heat. all chemical laboratory spaces and anatomy labs reduce energy consumption through demand controlled exhaust equipment and fume hoods. downdraft tables in anatomy and necropsy labs are provided. animal boarding areas have in cage ventilation. wet lab and biosafety cabinets feature combination sash fume hoods. labs are controlled with variable flow exhaust and supply valves for proper room pressurization and energy efficiency.
new plumbing systems provide domestic cold water, domestic hot water with recirculation, sanitary drainage and vent, storm water drainage piping systems, emergency eyewash/showers and compressed air and process vacuum systems. plumbing fixtures are ultra low flow. a new cage wash and autoclave are provided for animal pen and material cleaning/sanitizing. energy for the domestic hot water is provided through the gshp system with supplemental heat for sanitizing high temperature hot water provided by the central steam system and summer steam boiler. a new wet pipe sprinkler system serves the entire area of work.
a new power distribution system with energy metering at the building and individual panelboard level is being provided. an 800kw diesel standby generator offers emergency backup for life safety and hvac systems. updates to fire alarm, security, it and data systems are also provided. all led lighting is provided throughout with daylight and occupancy controls. the animal holding areas have tunable led lighting to control light level and color spectrum.
pathfinder is providing mechanical, plumbing and fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the total renovation of this historic 90,000 sq. ft. building. marshall hall was built in 1933 and has not undergone significant renovation in over 40 years. this project is being designed with a deep energy savings retrofit target of 50% energy reduction relative to the building’s existing consumption and the goal of leed gold certification.
the project is decoupling from the district steam heat source. marshall hall will be equipped with high efficiency condensing boilers. additionally, the perimeter steam radiators, gravity unit ventilators, fan coil units and all steam and condensate piping will be replaced with a building wide hydronic heating system with occupancy based controls. all components are being sized for compatibility with a future geothermal sourced heating system.
this project will provide cooling to all spaces via a new heat pump loop and ventilation will be provided through demand controlled energy recovery ventilator units. occupancy sensors will tailor ventilation airflow rates to each space to maximize energy efficiency.
all lighting and power will be replaced in the building. new lighting will be energy efficient utilizing led technologies. historical light fixtures in the main lobby and spiral stairwell will be refurbished and relamped to be more energy efficient as well. a 100a 408/277v 3 phase 4 wire diesel emergency generator will be provided to serve the life safety loads in the building.
new telecommunication systems will be provided throughout the building. additionally, a new fully addressable fire alarm system will be provided. card access and security systems will also be replaced.
nuthatch hollow is a 75 acre environmental learning and research preserve at binghamton university. the campus selected pathfinder to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing engineering and energy modeling for a new 3,450 sq. ft. environmental classroom and research facility that strives for living building challenge and passive house (phius) certification.
pathfinder provided energy modeling for the new four story residence hall with 229 student beds and offering high energy performance.
the $22.9 million project achieved a leed platinum certification as the result of a number of energy saving and sustainable design features. pathfinder’s energy modeling projected that dragon hall will use 58% less energy, with 50% less energy cost than the national baseline by which similar facilities are measured.
pathfinder completed a nyserda technical assistance study for the project and determined that the campus was eligible for $103,000 in incentives for energy efficiency, with additional incentives for the solar array under a separate program.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for the renovation to create a campus academic success center. constructed in 1974, the 52,000 sq. ft. building received renovations to 20,000 sq. ft. to create large spaces for group learning, study and testing, as well as individual offices for meetings with students.
mechanical system design retained two existing roof top units and added a packaged roof top air handler with direct expansion cooling (31 tons) to meet the needs of the additional square footage on the first floor. new fin tube radiation baseboard heaters were installed in the new program spaces on the first floor along perimeter walls. a new radiant snow melt system was provided to the new main entrance walkways. supplemental cooling provided to the second floor conference spaces included ceiling mounted mini split evaporators and associated air cooled mini split system condensing units located on the roof.
a new 4” fire sprinkler service with dual zone fire protection system designed to nfpa 13 provides full coverage of the building.
existing power distribution and panels provide convenient branch circuit power. led lighting fixtures are primarily controlled by occupancy sensors. the existing fire alarm system was expanded with smoke and/or heat detection sensors providing the most current life safety protection throughout the building.
pathfinder is providing mechanical and plumbing engineering and energy modeling for the renovation of sturges and fraser halls. program development has been completed with the primary objective of enriching academic and student life experience at sturges quad with improved facilities.
sturges hall, a 43,250 sq. ft. historic building is a total of four stories and features a clock tower that rises above most surrounding buildings. the 26,500 sq. ft. fraser hall is connected to sturges hall via a first floor bridge known as fraser arch; fraser hall is also attached to wadsworth auditorium and linked to south hall.
both fraser and sturges halls are in need of major upgrades. much of the building is unventilated, the heating system is original to the building and there is no central cooling. new systems will include dedicated, decoupled ventilation and conditioning systems with energy recovery. campus soil conditions are being evaluated to determine whether a ground coupled geothermal system is a viable heating/cooling system option. the conditioning systems being designed need to take into consideration not only the functional program requirements of space usage, but the aesthetics of the renovated areas as well as the historic nature of the buildings themselves. all visible system components will be selected to integrate seamlessly with the aesthetics of the spaces they serve. plumbing upgrades will include water efficient fixtures.
construction of this $30 million renovation will occur in four phases to minimize multiple department moves during construction.
pathfinder provided mechanical engineering and energy modeling for the design of a new 250 bed residence hall at the college at brockport that was delivered as a design/build project on behalf of dasny. the 65,000 sq. ft. four story building was designed with a central open lobby plan, resident advisor housing, multipurpose/community room, student amenities on the first floor and student residence rooms on the second, third and fourth floors.
the hvac design features a base valance (two pipe) heating and cooling system for the student and ra residences and a separate ventilation air system with air to air energy recovery. each resident room has individual temperature control. the hydronic systems operate with variable temperature and flowrate for optimal energy efficiency.
pathfinder provided mechanical and plumbing engineering for the renovation of this 74,588 sq. ft. building. laser scanning of the mechanical room was also provided.
air handlers serving the classrooms, laboratories and office areas were replaced. the design included new energy saving technologies for air handling and hvac systems including energy recovery wheels, demand controlled ventilation systems, airflow monitoring systems, variable speed drives, etc. constant volume air systems were upgraded to vav to maximize energy savings. metering was added to the central plant chilled water and steam systems thus allowing the campus to monitor energy use of the hall in accordance with e088.
laboratories were renovated to provide services that more closely match their current use. distilled water and acid waste piping were removed and replaced with standard drains and water service. domestic water heating systems were upgraded to high efficiency gas fired water heaters. lab hood control systems were installed to ensure proper air balance in the building and to maximize airside efficiency.
other major improvements included the addition of a building sprinkler system in the renovated work areas and upgrades to existing restrooms for ada compliance.
pathfinder provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and architectural design for decentralization from the campus boiler plant for the complex including dormitory buildings and the chenango champlain collegiate center. the dormitories total 740,000 sq. ft. and the collegiate center is 200,000 sq. ft. the project included installation of new modular gas fired hot water boiler plants with the capacity to serve the two existing central distribution heating systems for the communities. this allows the university the capability to heat east campus housing with natural gas fired boilers rather than coal via the central heating plant.
pathfinder provided mechanical and electrical engineering for the renovation of greenhouses and replacement of the 5th floor heating system at illick hall. the greenhouse area totals 7,145 sq. ft. the design includes 600 sq. ft. of photovoltaic glass in each of the two greenhouses with 10% transparent glass and 2.5 kw of solar electric system capacity per each of the two greenhouses. the project features a 844 sq. ft. r&d containment greenhouse that meets usda, aphis containment guidelines for non indigenous, phytophagous arthropods and their parasitoids and predators. methods implemented to meet these guidelines include containment hepa filtration on ventilation/exhaust systems and sterilization of effluent from sinks, floor drains and condensate drains.
pathfinder provided mechanical, fire protection and electrical engineering design for a 1,000 sq. ft. visualization laboratory on the first floor of the carlson library at the university of rochester. the vista collaboratory, a $1.2 million facility, is equipped with an interactive tiled display wall that can render massive data sets in real time. this allows faculty, students and researchers the ability to visualize and analyze complex data instantaneously and collaboratively.
a 20’ wide and 8’ tall wall consists of 24 displays arranged in a curved matrix creating an immersive experience. both static and dynamic visual content is clear and crisp at 50 megapixel resolution. the collaboratory is directly connected to university supercomputers and operates like a desktop computer system.
high efficiency lighting features touchscreen control for easy arrangement of lighting scenes to best suit occupant needs. sensors were provided for the conference room and two offices with the offices featuring led troffer lighting and programmable controls. power to new equipment in the space, new hvac equipment and the addition of data ports, entry card readers and wifi hub posts were provided. multiple floor stations allow for devices to connect to the visual panel and for various furniture configurations.
mechanical design included revisions to the existing ahu/vav system ductwork for heating and cooling to the conference room and offices. hvac control sequence updates for make up air unit and zone control via the building bms were also provided. updates to the fire protection system were provided.
pathfinder designed a new ground source wellfield and primary pumping and piping system upon the completion of a gshp well field concept study for suny university at albany. the college secured a federal stimulus grant of $2.7 million and, with dasny, investigated incorporating ground source heat pump (gshp) into this new $70 million, 500 bed residence hall project. the application of gshp technology presented a sustainability opportunity for the university and this project. the project was comprised of two new buildings and was designed to comply with nys executive order 111 and meet leed gold criteria.
