Pathfinder Project Takes Center Stage

Events

It’s not often that Pathfinder projects have international exposure (yes, it’s happened before). The 11-day Winter World University Games opened last week, bringing high-level sports, educational and cultural events to facilities operated by the Lake Placid Olympic Regional Development Authority.

The January 12-22 Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games features competition in 12 winter sports and 85 events in venues throughout New York State’s North Country region including Lake Placid, Wilmington, Saranac Lake, Potsdam, Canton and North Creek. The Games is the largest winter multi-sport collegiate athletic event in the world, welcoming 1,443 collegiate-athletes from more than 540 universities and 46 nations.

During the Games, Senior Commissioning Authority Tim Duprey, BCxP, is one of several engineering professionals onsite supporting ORDA staff ensuring that buildings are operating optimally. Tim is at the Mount Van Hoevenberg Lodge keeping occupants comfortable throughout the days with adjustments to the BMS system.

Pathfinder has been providing design services and commissioning for ORDA facilities for nearly five years, as the Authority updated its facilities in advance of the Games.  Key projects included:

  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for the $80 million renovations to modernize the Lake Placid Olympic Center. The Center hosted two Olympics games.  Areas of work included the 1980 Arena, the Link Building, the 1932 Arena, the Oval and associated Oval Building.
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for the design-build bridging documents for Mount Van Hoevenberg Lodge, a 45,475 sq. ft. support facility and visitor lodge for the mountain’s Cross-country Ski, Snowshoe, Biathlon, Bobsled, Luge and Skeleton programs. The project also included a 7,395 sq. ft. push-track practice start facility, expanded to 12,000 square feet when complete, and a 6,440 sq. ft. fieldhouse.
  • Commissioning for the new Mount Van Hoevenberg Lodge during the construction phase, as well as final equipment installation review, testing and documentation.
  • Commissioning for the new 26,000 sq. ft. Whiteface Mountain Mid-Station Lodge. The building consists of three levels and contains a food service facility, restrooms, common areas and various building support areas.
  • Commissioning for the renovated 35, 375 sq. ft. Belleayre Mountain Discovery Lodge
Tim Duprey and the Games Mascot Mac.
