SUNY University at Albany Colonial Quad
Pathfinder is providing mechanical and fire protection engineering and energy modeling for the renovations and addition at Paine and Zenger Residence Halls, along with a connecting building with kitchen and dining facilities. The project will re-program space, improve ADA and life-safety issues and update building systems. Renovations will consist of upgrades to improve livability, comply with current building codes and improve energy performance.
The residence halls, constructed in 1965, are similar in size and utilization. Paine Hall is approximately 32,000 sq. ft. with 101 beds and Zenger Hall is approximately 31,000 sq. ft. with 88 beds. The renovated residence halls will maximize the bed count, provide large laundry room, study rooms, Wi-Fi, etc., maximize natural light, create open public spaces, and provide a desirable housing choice for students, one with a contemporary, energy efficient, comfortable, and safe living environment.
The connecting lower level, mezzanine floors and basement level are approximately 30,000 sq. ft. and consist of Colonial Quad’s closed kitchen and dining spaces, loading dock and mechanical spaces, fitness center and administrative offices. The connecting lower level, mezzanine floors and basement level spaces – and likely the adjacent outdoor and courtyard spaces -- shall be programmed to accommodate future campus needs. The site and space will also require thoughtful consideration of its connectivity to the campus community with handicapped accessibility throughout.
HVAC systems will be upgraded, and will be provided be provided through a connection to the campus high temperature hot water (HTHW) and chilled water systems. Air conditioning will be added, utilizing the University’s chilled water distribution system.
Pathfinder’s is providing modeling to document compliance with both NYS Executive Order 88 and LEED certification. The design phase energy model has an annual EUI of 78.9 kBtu/sf/year.
